Grinning in the rain
As you may have noticed from my monthly list of just-read books, I’m a sincere fan of memoirs. This interest extends to radio interviews and podcasts, as well.
I think I get this love from Mom. Back in the ’70s when she had a houseful of kids, Mom would drag a portable radio with her from room to room as she dusted, changed the sheets, and vacuumed. She would catch fascinating radio interviews with musicians, actors, writers, and history makers. Often she’d tell me about them when I got off the school bus that afternoon.
Imagine her delight when we moved into a house with an intercom system – complete with AM/FM radio!
Back in my middle-school years, when we lived in Fairfield, Connecticut, I’d eagerly turn the radio dial to WOR each Sunday night. Because at precisely 10:15pm it was time to catch storyteller Jean Shepherd. He’s the guy who went on to share hilarious childhood memories through the movie “A Christmas Story.”
Good news! Increasingly, radio stations are converting their archives to podcasts. A simple search will net untold treasures! Here’s a great interview with Debbie Reynolds from back in 2014 that I happened upon last night:
In the middle of her delightful chat with Alec Baldwin, the inimitable Ms. Reynolds mentions her date of birth: April 1.
Such a coincidence – that’s Cameron’s birthday, too!
I shared the podcast link with Mom and Dad earlier today (via text, with fingers crossed) and by golly they’ve already figured it out and had a good listen. Quite appropriately, they’ve provided me with a wish list of other interviews to find for them. Something tells me Debbie Reynolds is just the beginning!
