In like a lion
According to weather lore: If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.
Here in Indiana, the lion was roaring all day.
Here’s a poem Mom wrote in 1976, with her promise to a lion:
the lion’s house
lion
in the spring of the year
I am going to build a house for you
when it is ready
the rabbits will pour champagne
the squirrels will pass around the cakes
you may borrow my emerald ribbons for the day
and carry a pawful of tulips
listen – I will tell you about your house
I have planned it from your own description
the tree is worthy of your soul
its leaves will be green in winter
I will visit you when you wish
dusk will climb into your house
and dawn
night as deep as oceans
day as bright as coronations
I see you drinking cocoa in the snow
lion
I have seen your sad face vanish in the corner of your cage
and I say now to you
that you will have your house
I want you to start dreaming of it tonight
so that the watchman on his rounds
may stop before your sleeping smile
and wonder why

Speaking of lions, grandson Cameron is on his way here for an overnight. We plan to read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz together, a Folio Society edition with its delightful illustrations.

Here’s hoping you have a good book to read this weekend!
We’ll be watching for that lamb at the other end of the month.
